Elaine de Kooning: Bacchus at Independent 20th Century

Harlem Frames was honored to contribute to the presentation of Elaine de Kooning’s Bacchus series at Independent 20th Century 2026, custom framing original paintings from the series for Olney Gleason’s focused presentation at The Breuer in New York.

Created between 1976 and 1983, the Bacchus paintings grew from de Kooning’s repeated studies of a 19th-century bronze sculpture of Bacchus in Paris’s Jardin du Luxembourg. Across the series, the twisting figure becomes increasingly animated through sweeping gesture, vivid color, and the energetic abstraction that characterized de Kooning’s practice.

Presented September 24–27, the exhibition brought these works together as part of Independent 20th Century’s broader exploration of 20th-century art. For Harlem Frames, it was a privilege to prepare and frame these original works with the care and precision required for their exhibition presentation.
